Perhaps because of her very determination to escape reality, Elizabeth slept long and late. She was awakened with the summons that Her Grace wished to see her immediately.

Elizabeth dressed quickly in a muslin gown of pale blue, with long darker blue silk ribbons tied round its high waist. It had three deep flounces, and the length was cut fashionably short to expose most of her ankle.

As she made her way downstairs, a great deal of her fright began to leave her. The duchess could not possibly mean to berate her in front of Lord Charles, in front of the other guests.

Elizabeth pushed open the double doors of the drawing room and then stood stock still.

The original members of the house party and the duke and duchess of Dunster, together with Lord Charles and Lady Jane, stood about in various attitudes of disdain.

And the objects of their disdain stood firmly in the middle of the duchess’s Chinese carpet, staring about them with angry, defiant eyes.

They were Julius Markham, his wife, and their two daughters, Patience and Prudence.
